About the movement

The side plank trains the obliques and the deep core muscles that stabilize your spine from side to side. Strong obliques protect your back in every twisting movement.

How to do it

  1. 1

Lie on your side with your elbow under your shoulder and legs stacked.

  2. 2

Lift your hips until your body forms a straight line from head to feet.

  3. 3

Brace your core and breathe steadily without letting your hips drop.

  4. 4

Hold for the set, then switch sides.

Form tips

  • Keep your shoulder stacked over your elbow, not rolled forward.
  • Squeeze your glutes to keep your hips from sagging.
  • Start on your knees if a full side plank is too hard, and build up slowly.
